On top of the world

Tamil Nadu can take some pride in Ramalingam Thirulogachandran. The 29-year-old accounts executive with Blue Dart Aviation completed in 8 hours and 8 minutes and 44 seconds the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon, held recently to commemorate the 51st anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.

He completed the 42 km marathon from Mt. Everest Base Camp (5364 m) to Namche Bazaar (3446 m). Thirulogachandran was the only participant from India this year, says Sarad Pradhan, the Event Director.

"I could take immense pride in hoisting the tri-colour to mark my participation in this prestigious marathon", says a beaming Thirulogachandran, whose passion for mountaineering grows with every event.

Thirulogachandran reported at Kathmandu on May 15. "I started my trekking from Lukla on May 18 via Phakding-Namche, Bazaar-Khumjung-Tenbouche-Pheriche-Lobuche-Gorekchep to reach Mt. Kalapathar and Everest Base camp."If encouraged by the Tamil Nadu Government, I will be able to accomplish even more", he says thanking the Sports Development Authority for making available Rs.25,000.

His next mission: next year's Speed Everest Ascent via South Col Route by the Asian Trekking International. "If I get sponsorship, I will be able to achieve a new record to be on top of the world".
