Introduction - Lhasa Marathon

Lhasa Marathon

Inspired and encouraged by successful running of Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon since 2003 the Golden Jubilee Event year of the first successful Mount Everest Expedition 1953, our idea was clear that we should promote Adventure Sports Events throughout the Himalaya destination. In the context, outcame Mr. Yao Zhi from Lhasa to meet us in Kathmandu to invite us to promote Marathon in Tibet as well.

Mr. Yao Zhi was highly inspired by the success of the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon, so he thought Lhasa would be another great location to host such Adventure Sports Events. Nepal and Tibet has long years of excellent relations in fact a brotherhood nurtured by the marriage of Nepalese Princess to the King of Tibet Shrong Tshong Gompo in the early history of Nepal & Tibet relation.

The idea was great to both parties and hence the first marathon has been announced on the "World Tourism Day" of 27th September 2007 in Lhasa city also known as the "Roof of the World".

About Marathon

The Marathon takes place in Lhasa City, the Capital of Tibet, the Autonomous Region of China. So its the highest capital in the world and its also known as the "Roof of the World".

We run the Marathon at the altitude of 12,000ft with the kick off start from Potala Palace Square. We make a round of Potala Palace clockwise and run toward Jokhang Temple. After making a round of Jokhang Temple following Buddhist norms we run a southerly route toward Norbulingka Palace.

We criss-cross Lhasa city through Lhasa roads and narrow street winding the run through various places of interests to finally finish the marathon at Lhasa Horse Race Stadium. By then we have covered a distance of 22 kms, half the distance of Olympic Standards 42.195 kms Marathon run.

Getting Around

We fly to Lhasa from Kathmandu in the process of our acclimatization. We will have about a week tour in Lhasa before the marathon to fully acclimatize for the run. After the marathon we can visit the near by towns of interest such as Tshedang, Shigatse or even travel through scenic Lhasa Kathmandu Road passing through High passes of Tibet with magnificent view of Mount Everest and other majestic mountains.
