Race Headquarters
Kathmandu:
Everyone will be staying at the Hotel Shanker and the lobby will be
our connecting point. Upon arrival all runners will be given a
briefing their race bibs and everyone will get other important
information.
Lodging While in Kathmandu
Our host hotel will be the Hotel Shanker. All rooms are double
occupancy unless other wise stated. There is an extra fee for single
rooms. Breakfast will be included with your room.
Extra Night in Kathmandu: US$ 70 per person (Single
Occupancy) , US$
40 (Double Occupancy)
Storage of extra luggage while trekking
Hotel Shanker will store your extra luggage for you in a safe claim
check area. Your trekking bag should be ready to go the night before
the trek starts and your extra luggage should be checked in with the
front desk.
How much extra cash should I bring?
You will need to purchase bottled drinking water, while in Kathmandu
along with 3 lunches and 4 dinners. Also any snacks or other
personal items in Kathmandu or during the trek. Once back in Lukla
and finished trekking everyone will combine money toward tipping the
staff. But once on the trek all meals and tented or teahouse lodging
is included. You must also count on spending some money while in
transit to Nepal.
It is suggested to bring a total of $ 500 USD. This can be broken
down: $300 in travelers' checks and $200 in cash, some small bills.
There is an ATM machine around Kathmandu and near the hotel that
takes most major bank cash cards, or credit cards. You will receive
your cash from the ATM machine in Nepali currency the Rupee. As of
June 24, $1 USD = Rs 68. The fee for using the ATM machine will
depend on your banks transaction fees. Most fees are around $1.50
per transaction.
Tipping of staff
Each person should plan to bring $50 in rupees
for tipping. It should be set aside for the end of the trek. You
will be advised on how the tipping process works. Here is a
suggestion.
1. Head Sirdar (Nepalese Group Leader, organizer of the staff during
the trek) Rs 5000
2. Head cook Rs 4000 each
3. Cook boys Rs 2000 each
4. Sherpa guides Rs 2000 each
5. Yak men if yaks are used Rs 1500 each
6. Porters Rs 2000 each
Also if you have personal contact with a staff member and want to
pass along an item of clothing that is acceptable.
Travel Insurance
Please purchase travel insurance that covers the following things.
1. Trip cancellation
• Trip interruption
• Travel delay
Medical emergency /evacuation
If you have never purchase this type of insurance you can ask your
health care provider, travel agent, homeowner's insurance agent or
we can suggest Global Care. They can be found at
www.globalcare-cocco.com. Also if you do a search on the internet,
there are quite a few to choose from.
What you should bring as carry-on when traveling to Nepal.
1. One change of street clothes and one set of running clothing.
2. Two pair underwear
3. Any medications prescribed by your doctor, and contact lens
eyewash.
4. Your hiking boots, w/2 pair socks/running shoes, w/socks
5. The daypack you'll use while trekking
6. All currency in a travel money belt
