Travel Guide

Race Headquarters
Kathmandu:

Everyone will be staying at the Hotel Shanker and the lobby will be our connecting point. Upon arrival all runners will be given a briefing their race bibs and everyone will get other important information.

Lodging While in Kathmandu

Our host hotel will be the Hotel Shanker. All rooms are double occupancy unless other wise stated. There is an extra fee for single rooms. Breakfast will be included with your room.

Extra Night in Kathmandu: US$ 70 per person (Single Occupancy) , US$ 40 (Double Occupancy)

Storage of extra luggage while trekking

Hotel Shanker will store your extra luggage for you in a safe claim check area. Your trekking bag should be ready to go the night before the trek starts and your extra luggage should be checked in with the front desk.

How much extra cash should I bring?

You will need to purchase bottled drinking water, while in Kathmandu along with 3 lunches and 4 dinners. Also any snacks or other personal items in Kathmandu or during the trek. Once back in Lukla and finished trekking everyone will combine money toward tipping the staff. But once on the trek all meals and tented or teahouse lodging is included. You must also count on spending some money while in transit to Nepal.
It is suggested to bring a total of $ 500 USD. This can be broken down: $300 in travelers' checks and $200 in cash, some small bills.

There is an ATM machine around Kathmandu and near the hotel that takes most major bank cash cards, or credit cards. You will receive your cash from the ATM machine in Nepali currency the Rupee. As of June 24, $1 USD = Rs 68. The fee for using the ATM machine will depend on your banks transaction fees. Most fees are around $1.50 per transaction.

Tipping of staff

Each person should plan to bring $50 in rupees for tipping. It should be set aside for the end of the trek. You will be advised on how the tipping process works. Here is a suggestion.
1. Head Sirdar (Nepalese Group Leader, organizer of the staff during the trek) Rs 5000
2. Head cook Rs 4000 each
3. Cook boys Rs 2000 each
4. Sherpa guides Rs 2000 each
5. Yak men if yaks are used Rs 1500 each
6. Porters Rs 2000 each

Also if you have personal contact with a staff member and want to pass along an item of clothing that is acceptable.
